Kurt Merki Jr. is a renowned designer with a rich multicultural background, born in Accra, Ghana, in 1978. Growing up between Switzerland and Ghana, Kurt’s upbringing was deeply influenced by his Swiss master carpenter father and Ghanaian fashion designer mother. His journey into the world of design began in his father’s furniture factory, where he learned the intricacies of woodworking from a young age.
After completing his master craftsman’s exam in Switzerland, Kurt honed his skills further by working as an interior designer for several architectural firms in Zurich. Seeking to deepen his design knowledge, he pursued a master’s degree in interior and product design at the Scuola Politecnica di Design in Milan. This experience laid the foundation for his subsequent career in design.
In 2010, Kurt returned to Zurich and established his own design studio, where he has since built a distinguished reputation for his innovative and award-winning designs. Over the years, he has garnered extensive experience across various domains, including product design, retail, and architecture.

- iF Design Award and Red Dot Award (2019) for the XSquare bathroom furniture series designed for Duravit.
- Red Dot Award – Best of the Best, Iconic Award, and iF Product Design Award for the Vero bathroom furniture series.
- Swiss Location Award (2021) for the House of Läderach, which includes the headquarters of Läderach Chocolatier Suisse, a chocolate museum, and a coffee shop.
- Recognition for the design of several private houses in Switzerland and Ghana.
- Contribution to the brand development and design of the perfume “Scent of Africa,” launched worldwide in March 2022.
